The Doubter Series: Discussion 2 -Burdens of Guilt
Laying it All Out:
Imagine you’re a religious doubter in the closet. Yep, that old chestnut. Maybe you are one or were one. Maybe you never had to worry about that and were able to come out as an atheist to your friends and family. That’s wonderful, but we all can’t do that. This discussion is for the doubters who are kept in the allegorical chains of religion because of family members and friends and the extreme guilt they place upon you, and oh yeah, fear.
Coming out of the closet sounds a bit too easy for revealing yourself as a non-believier or revealing you have doubts about God and religion in general, doesn’t it? Should we call it “descending from beneath the preist’s robes?” Sorry, little shot at my Catholic upbringing. How about just “breaking free?” That sounds more like it. Because that’s basically what you have to do when you have a religious, overbearing and judging family, break free.
